Book Reviews by London Students

Our library now has children's audio books. The audio books are in MP3 format in which they will be checking out the MP3 player preloaded with the audiobook along with the actual book so they can follow along with the reader. Our belief is that young beginning readers can benefit from listening to the reader with headsets providing a more focused reading environment. Children are naturally drawn to anything new and seem to love technology. By combing books with modern technology parents and teachers are able to help reluctant readers develop a passion for reading. If your child brings an MP3 player home request an extra pair of headphones or plug in your IPod phones and listen along with your child. Each player has two plugins for listening. Most audiobooks also have Accelerated Reader tests that can be taken at school. Teachers will also be able to use these technologies in their classrooms by plugging in a jackbox with six headphones providing a listening center. The London library looks forward to watching the children learn with the new technlogy.

A new "Young Adult" section has been added to the library for our middle school students. Some of the books in our library collection are by authors who write for middle/high school readers. These books may deal with more mature themes. Authors such as Stephenie Meyer, Meg Cabot, and Michael Crichton, are often requested. Most of the titles on these shelves in our library have been recognized as exceptional books for young people by winning major children's book awards. All of our Young Adult book selections have a bright yellow and red "YA" sticker on their spines, identifying them as from our Young Adult section. Sixth through eighth grade students are able to check out YA books ONLY if a parental signed permission slip has been submitted to Mrs. Luis.

All London teachers have access to Discovery Education's digital video-on-demand and online teaching service. A web-based digital video delivery system from Discovery Education.
