London Band Program

The band program at London in 2021 has approximately 105 students participating from grades 6 –12.  At London, band begins in the sixth grade and is taught by Stephen Maldonado.  In beginning band, each student receives daily instruction in one beginner class.  Careful attention is given to tone production, music theory, rhythmic concepts, individual development, ensemble skills, and music reading skills.

At London High School, all students participate in the London "Mighty Pirate" Marching Band during the majority of the fall semester.  The marching band is a musical and visual representation of the music program at London, performing at varsity football games while preparing for UIL Marching contest. The London "Mighty Pirate" Marching Band has participated in UIL marching contest for 3 years and has earned a sweepstakes designation in those years. In its second year of competition the London "Mighty Pirate" Marching Band advanced to the AREA marching contest for the first time ever.

Although the marching band is a staple for the music program, the concert band makes up the foundation of the organization.  Currently, students participate in one "Honors" Band, which meet daily for 50 minutes.  The  "Honors" concert band  participates in concerts throughout the year and in UIL Concert and Sight-Reading.  The London High School "Honors" band has consistently earned the UIL Sweepstakes Award in Concert and Sight Reading. In its short six years of existence, the London High School "Honors" band has earned sweepstakes awards for the last three consecutive years.

As individuals, many students participate in the Region Band process and in Solo & Ensemble. About 10 percent of the high school band students participate in the All-Region Band. Five percent of the auditioning students qualify for Area auditions that qualify for All-State band placements. Our numbers, for this advancing audtion process, continue to grow as our high school band numbers grow.

The London band program is fortunate to have the steadfast support of a dynamic band booster organization.  In addition to raising funds, these caring parents/individuals provide physical, mental, and moral support to all of the students and staff.
